A US immigration officer shot and killed a Mexican citizen during an identity check in Houston.
The US Department of Homeland Security said the man was in the country illegally and tried to hit an agent with his car. The officer then opened fire.
According to the department’s account, agents stopped the car at about 6:50 a.m. as part of an operation to detain an undocumented immigrant. The driver was Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a native of Mexico.
“Information received indicates that he rammed an ICE law-enforcement vehicle, refused to comply with multiple verbal commands, and used his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to run over an ICE officer, resulting in our officer discharging his weapon in self-defense,” the statement said.
Local authorities said Araujo was wounded in the abdomen and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The shooting involving an ICE officer is being investigated by the Office of Inspector General at the US Department of Homeland Security.
According to media reports, Araujo had lived in the US for about 35 years. He is survived by two children.
