International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan, who sought arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu, has been suspended after allegations of sexual harassment.
The investigation into Khan began in November 2024. One ICC employee alleged that in 2023 and 2024 he repeatedly pressured her into sexual relations and engaged in sexual conduct without her consent. According to her, this took place during work trips, in his office and at his home.
In May 2025, Khan went on administrative leave. He has now been fully suspended from work.
The United States had earlier imposed sanctions on Khan over his position on Israel. Donald Trump also imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court in The Hague, accusing it of “illegal and baseless actions” against the United States and Israel.
Trump said the court had “asserted jurisdiction without lawful basis and opened preliminary investigations into U.S. citizens and those of certain U.S. allies, including Israel.” According to him, the ICC then “further abused its power” by issuing “baseless arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.”
The restrictions provide for financial and visa sanctions against involved ICC officials and their relatives.
Netanyahu has already thanked Trump for the decision.
In 2019, Trump had already imposed sanctions on the ICC. Joe Biden’s administration later lifted them.
