Gunfire broke out during the White House Correspondents’ dinner attended by Donald Trump and White House reporters at Washington’s Washington Hilton hotel.
According to preliminary reports, an armed man tried to break through security but was detained. One Secret Service officer was wounded and taken to hospital.
Trump was not harmed. After the shooting began, the president, first lady Melania Trump, and vice-president JD Vance were evacuated.

Authorities said the detainee is a 31-year-old man from California. According to CNN, his name is Cole Allen and he works as a teacher. His motives have not yet been established.
On Monday, April 27, the detainee is due to appear in court for the first time. Prosecutors plan to charge him with firearms offences and assaulting a federal officer with a weapon.
