Germany will deploy its troops to reinforce Poland’s eastern border with Belarus and Russia, several media outlets reported on Saturday. As reported by Deutsche Welle, citing Germany’s defense ministry, several dozen German service members will join Poland’s East Shield program starting in April 2026, with the mission initially set to run through the end of 2027.
According to a spokesperson for the defense ministry, German units will be employed primarily in engineering tasks. These include building defensive positions, digging trenches, installing barbed wire, and constructing anti-tank obstacles.
East Shield is a €2.3bn program announced by Warsaw last year, aimed at strengthening security along the country’s eastern border.
