On January 7, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good—a U.S. citizen and the mother of three. Her car had crossed the path of ICE agents during one of the agency’s operations. U.S. authorities said the woman allegedly took part in “domestic terrorism,” attempting to obstruct officers, block their passage, and ram one of the agents with her vehicle. The White House echoed this account. U.S. President Donald Trump said the shooting was carried out “in self-defense.”
Journalists who reviewed video footage of the incident from multiple angles, however, concluded that it remains at least unclear whether Good struck an ICE officer with her car. According to their findings, the agent opened fire as the woman was attempting to drive away from him to the side. Experts interviewed by Reuters say the officer’s actions warrant close scrutiny. One suggested the case may involve a situation in which the ICE agent—deliberately or inadvertently—created dangerous conditions that led to the use of lethal force. Vice President J.D. Vance, for his part, called Renee Nicole Good’s death “a tragedy of her own making”. In Minneapolis—as in other U.S. cities—protests against the immigration service followed the killing.
