Former British MP Ann Widdecombe has been found dead in England, Sky News reports.
Devon and Cornwall Police have opened a murder investigation. According to law-enforcement officials, they responded to a call at the home of 78-year-old Widdecombe around noon and found her body with serious injuries.
In the evening, police reported the arrest of a 26-year-old British citizen on suspicion of murder. Law-enforcement officials did not disclose details about him or possible motives.
For now, Widdecombe’s killing is not being treated as a terrorist act or a politically motivated crime.
Ann Widdecombe was born in 1947 in Somerset. From 1987 to 2010, she was a Conservative Party member of parliament. Widdecombe was known for her conservative views, including on family, immigration, and European integration. In 2019–2020, she was a member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party.
