Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has opposed the idea of granting Ukraine the status of an “associate member” of the European Union, Dennik reports.
Commenting on the proposal by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Fico said there is currently no support within the EU for initiatives of that kind.
“Either we admit someone, or we do not. Today, there is no atmosphere within the European Union for steps of this nature,” the Slovak prime minister said.
According to Fico, other candidate countries—primarily Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia—should receive priority in the EU enlargement process.
