Bloomberg questioned the feasibility of Europe’s plan to build a “drone wall,” calling the initiative more of a PR move. According to the outlet and its sources, the project is unlikely to be implemented in the foreseeable future.
Since European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU’s intention to construct a “drone wall” last month, Brussels has been scrambling to give the project practical form. EU leaders are expected to discuss it at an informal meeting in Copenhagen, but funding challenges mean implementation could take years. “We are not talking about a concept that will be realized within the next three to four years, or perhaps even longer,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius admitted in Warsaw.
One of the agency’s sources described the idea as PR masking the harsh reality. Another pointed out that building a line of drones along the EU’s eastern border would be extremely difficult due to the high density of passenger and cargo traffic, raising the risk of collateral damage. The core issue, according to insiders, is not just technology but also who will assume coordination and how to integrate national and regional initiatives, which often exceed the capacities of individual states.
Bloomberg stresses that the focus on drones distracts from a more serious problem: Europe lacks adequate air and missile defense systems and remains almost entirely dependent on the United States for long-range capabilities, even as President Donald Trump insists on greater autonomy for allies.

The pace of technological change only deepens the challenge. “The great technologies of 2024 will already be outdated by October 2025. Everyone understands that the drone wall should have been built a year or two ago,” said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs.
Funding presents an additional obstacle. EU member states have just two months to submit projects to access money from the bloc’s €150 billion credit facility. New funding sources will not become available until the next budget cycle begins in 2028.
