Britney Spears pleaded guilty on Monday to a reckless-driving charge in a case involving driving under the influence, avoiding jail time.
The 44-year-old singer, who had been accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and at least one drug, did not appear at the court hearing in Ventura County. Because the charge was a low-level offence, her presence was not required.
Ventura County district attorney Erik Nasarenko said Spears pleaded guilty through her lawyer, taking responsibility “at the earliest stage”, and agreed to continue treatment.
The singer was detained on March 4 on US 101 in Southern California after police stopped her for speeding and erratic driving. According to the California Highway Patrol, she appeared impaired and was arrested after taking field sobriety tests.
Spears was released on bail the following day. Within a month of the arrest, she voluntarily entered a substance-abuse treatment programme.
The singer’s representative called her actions “completely inexcusable” and said this could become “the first step towards long-overdue changes” in her life.
The Ventura County prosecutor’s office had previously said Spears could plead guilty to a lesser charge—a standard practice for first-time offenders willing to undergo treatment.
Spears, one of pop music’s defining figures for more than two decades, spent almost 14 years under a conservatorship. That legal arrangement, ended by a court in 2021, deprived her of the right to make independent decisions about her personal life, career, and finances.
In 2022 and 2023, she released singles with Elton John and will.i.am, but later said she did not plan to return to the music industry and has since rarely appeared in public.
