Albanian prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the possible unlawful registration of ownership rights to a plot of land where Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner plans to build a luxury resort.
Investigators allege that Albanian businessman Artur Shehu, who sold the land to Kushner, had himself obtained it illegally using forged documents. Prosecutors seized the $110 million paid in the transaction.
Shehu is also accused of real-estate fraud, drug trafficking, and laundering criminal proceeds.
The resort project previously sparked mass protests in Albania and criticism from the European Union. Prime Minister Edi Rama said the discontent was driven primarily by the Trump family’s involvement in the project.
