The Alternative for Germany party has, for the first time, overtaken the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union by a clear margin on two key indicators in the latest public opinion survey, Deutsche Welle reports.
Public Opinion Poll: The Top Five Parties in Germany (January 5, 2026)
According to the latest poll by the GMS institute, 27% of respondents say they would vote for the Alternative for Germany, while the Christian Democratic Union–Christian Social Union bloc is backed by 24%. For the Alternative for Germany, this represents both the highest level of support recorded in the history of GMS polling and the largest margin ever registered over the CDU/CSU—three percentage points.
By comparison, in a GMS survey conducted on January 3, 2025, the Christian Democratic Union–Christian Social Union bloc stood at 33%, while the Alternative for Germany was limited to 18%.
Support for the remaining political forces has shifted only marginally. The Social Democratic Party of Germany remains at 15%, Alliance 90/The Greens received 12%, the Left Party stands at 10%, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance at 4%.
